Babelone Art Viscose Jersey

This project is so simple that there is not a lot to say about it apart from showing you. This was from last autumn and I have to say not only have I forgotten the process of the make but it was done so rapidly that I have no process photos to remind me or tell you how it went.

Minerva’s Babelone Art Viscose Jersey fabric

This project is all about the fabric. It was one of my Minerva projects, this time highlighting their viscose jersey in a really vibrant print called Babelone Art print. It really reminded me of 1950s and 60s abstract art and I love the blues and reds brought together with the graffiti-like black strokes.

I discovered that I like this Viscose jersey blend as it gives a great touch to the fabric. It’s slightly lighter and softer than a regular jersey and feels great against the skin when you wear it.

This is such a busy design that I didn’t think it lent itself to anything with too much detail and anyway, jersey is casual fabric epitomised. I used two favourite patterns. The top is self-drafted, I copied this from a favourite T-shirt and I’ve made a few of these now, there’s a quick tutorial here. It’s a scoop neck tee with simple banded sleeves and shaped at the waist. I’m wearing it as a T-shirt in these pictures but it’s actually knee-length so can be worn alone as a dress. The trousers are the Derwent Wide Legged Trousers from Wendy Ward’s book, A Beginners Guide to Sewing with Knitted Fabric, from a few years ago. I love the shape of these and they seem to fit me so well and are very easy to make with just the right amount of width too.

It took just a couple of hours to knock these two pieces up on the coverlock. They are quite basic in construction, and I’m familiar with the process having made a few of each before.

Apart from a bit of a rookie error with pattern placement – I ended up with a pair of large red triangles in an unfortunate position in the centre of my body – I’m really happy with how this looks. I just pulled down the top to cover that area now.

I wore these first in the little tourist town of San Pedro de Atacama after a couple of weeks in the Andes moving through barren desert landscapes. You descend from the cold salty Altiplano of Bolivia into the hot dry sand of Chile. I was glad to arrive in a relative party town and put on some fun clothes. I’m glad to say, I got compliments on my outfit, standing out from the usual backpacker uniform of leggings and walking pants.

What do you think of this print, would you go this bold? Thanks for reading this and see you in my next review.

Thanks for dropping by,
