Minerva Core Range Wide Cotton Rib Stretch Knit Fabric Terracotta

Throwing it all the way back to about a year ago, I’m sharing a simple project that has given me a lot of wear over the year.

It was one of the fabric reviews that I had at the start of the year before I took a “break” to focus on learning pattern drafting.

I absolutely love the peachy colour of this ribbed stretch knit from Minerva.com – it’s one of my favourite shades. It’s described as terracotta, but I’d say it’s not as deep as that, definitely more coral or even salmon (is that the eighties calling?).

I paired this fabric with McCalls M8144 a waist-length sweater top with enormous Bishop sleeves and a cowl neck.

This was a very easy sew with a basic bodice , gathering to form the full sleeves and simple cuffs. There are no closures to worry about.

The fabric is a fairly heavy knit and is an ideal for a transitional garment, especially when the weather is as unpredictable as we have had it at the beginning of the year. It makes a good sweater under a coat when the weather is cold, but also I found it warm enough to wear without a coat in Spain in March. This week at home with glorious sunshine but icy winds, it was also a good option.

Although I really like how it turned out, I’m not sure this is the perfect fabric fir this pattern. It has a lot more body than expected

One thing I would say about the fabric is that it is a lot firmer than I expected. Now I normally love a cowl neck, but with this make, I’m not entirely sure I like it. I don’t know if that’s the pattern’s fault or the fabric, it just doesn’t drape as much as I would like. It’s worth noting that this fabric has a lot of body and therefore may suit more structured looks, not a drapey cowl.

Still, I really love this new top, it’s cosy, is really comfortable to wear and has epic sleeves. What more could a girl want?

Until the next one, happy sewing my friends x
