Waffle Fabric Faux Jumpsuit

Now I love jumpsuits and I’ve got quite a few in my wardrobe and this next project was supposed to be one. The inspiration was this blousey all in one that’s been on my Pinterest for a few years now. I still haven’t plucked up the courage to try and draft this – instead, I made a faux jumpsuit in a similar shape.

I used a combination of two patterns; for the top, I used New Look N6217. It’s a very simple top with a scoop neck bodice and a grown-on sleeve. I added a deep cuff to the sleeves and neckband to make it stand out.  The bottoms are sweatpants from an old Donna Karan Vogue pattern from my stash.

Sewn on the overlocker this was another easy project. The fabric does all the work. To add a little flair, I experimented with a wide neckline which, in my mind’s eye stood up a bit. I don’t know the proper name for it, but imagine a standing boat neck collar – is that a thing? I made what my imagination told me and it is semi-successful. I think I needed more (alright, some) interfacing. After the event I googled and it is in fact a thing.

The nice thing about the fabric being lighter is that it has fantastic drape and I was able to make the top and trousers seem very floaty even though they are both casual wear patterns. I wore them for a day’s sightseeing and around a campsite with trainers but they look just as good dressed up with nice shoes and make up for an evening out in my opinion.

I really like jumpsuits but as separates these pieces are more practical and although unlikely,  I could if I wanted to, wear each piece with alternative separates.

I’m very happy with the result and although not exactly like the inspiration, the overall silhouette is just what I wanted. I’m quite a lover of a technical pattern, but sometimes this stream-of-consciousness sewing really pleases me.

Do you sew from your mind’s eye?

Thanks for dropping by,

  1. That faux jumpsuit looks really good, especially with the wide belt, Elaine. I like the look of jumpsuits and I’m tempted to try something similar to your version because I’ve never liked the idea of getting down to my bra to use the bathroom, particularly in winter. How does it stay together? I’m guessing the top tucks in but how does the trouser waist not part company with the belt, as there don’t seem to be any belt loops? You do seem to have a well defined waist. Is that the answer?

    1. Hi and thank you for the visit. I totally agree with you on the bathroom striptease. The faux jumpsuit is definitely a good solution. As for the belt, you flatter me ☺ I have quite a striaight up and down body and these days a bit of belly, but a wide belt gives me the look of a defined waist. It’s very strong elastic and does stay put mostly but I have to adjust after sitting it to keep it in place.

    1. Thank you Catherine, I still want a go at drafting this jumpsuit, it looks like it should be straightforward if I can just get started on my blocks.
